Monroe, Edgewood girls reach sectional title game at Craig

Monroe High School brushed aside Richland Center, 63-53, Friday night at Waunakee, and now Badger South co-champion Madison Edgewood stands between the Cheesemakers and their quest to defend their WIAA Division 2 girls state basketball championship.

Monroe (22-2) and Edgewood (21-3) square off in a sectional final showdown with a state berth at stake at 7 tonight at Janesville Craig.

Edgewood advanced with a 46-33 sectional semifinal win over Southern Lakes runner-up Union Grove at Kettle Moraine, giving the Crusaders their 17th straight victory.

The Cheesemakers and Crusaders shared the Badger South title with 11-1 records. They split their regular-season games, with Monroe winning 60-40 on Dec. 12 and Edgewood posting a 49-44 victory on Jan. 16, which was the Cheesemakers’ last regular-season defeat.

“It’s our turn (to win),” Monroe coach Kevin Keen said.

The Cheesemakers rolled to an 18-9 first-quarter advantage over Richland Center (19-4) and led the rest of the way in the breaking the Hornets’ 19-game win streak.

Monroe kept command from the foul line making 29 of 34 free throws to 7 of 14 for Richland Center. Monroe was 14-for-18 on free throws in the first half.

Morgan Kennison scored 13 points for Monroe, going 7-for-7 from the foul line. Ashley Hermanson added 12 points for the Cheemakers, going 8-for-9 from the line, and Gwen Sutter chipped in 10 points.
