Milton's Felstead wins state gym title

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Competing at state gymnastic meets has turned out to be golden for Milton High’s Carleigh Felstead.

The Red Hawk sophomore, who was a member of a state team champion in Michigan a year ago, captured the Division 2 title on the uneven bars Friday night in Wisconsin Rapids. Felstead won the event with a score of 9.40 and also finished third on the balance beam with a score of 9.033. Felstead capped off a successful meet by finishing fourth overall in the all-around with a score of 36.017.

“She’s got a pretty dynamic routine,” Milton coach Kristine Farnsworth said of Felstead’s bars performance. “It has a lot of high level skills at the start and with some tough skills at the end.’’

Felstead’s bars score was the highest for both Division 1 and Division 2.

“We’re very excited she did so well,” said Farnsworth, who noted Felstead fell during her bars routine at the Platteville sectional last week.

“We really focused on consistency this week,” Farnsworth said.

Janesville Parker’s Erika Whitson, the first Viking gymnast to compete in the Division 1 all-around, finished 22nd with a combined score of 32.983. Whitson, a sophomore, was also 21st on floor exercise and 24th on balance beam.

Janesville Craig’s Sara Ennocenti had the city’s top finish. The sophomore tied for 11th on vault with a score of 9.1. Craig High freshman Becky Schneider tied for 13th on the balance beam.

In other Division 2 competition, Whitewater’s Kim Stonewerth finished 10th in the all-around, which included a tie for fourth-place on vault with a score of 9.217.

Jefferson’s Molly Spitzer was 24th in the all-around.
