Middleton, Sauk Prairie girls to play for state berth

Middleton High’s girls basketball team wasted no time Friday night in moving within one step of a second straight trip to the WIAA Division 1 state tournament.

The Big Eight co-champion Cardinals (20-3) hammered Madison Memorial, 50-28, in the first game of the Middleton Sectional to set a championship matchup with Badger North co-champion Sauk Prairie (19-4) at 7 tonight at Middleton.

Sauk Prairie advanced to the sectional final with a 51-50 win over La Crosse Logan (19-4).

The Middleton sectional champion plays Janesville Parker or Verona at 6:35 p.m. Thursday in the state quarterfinals at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Emily Newman had four of Middleton’s seven three-point goals and 16 points to lead the sectional semifinal blitz of Memorial (9-14). The Cardinals rode a 17-3 second quarter to a 29-10 halftime lead.

Alicia Evans had 14 points for Memorial.
