A cougar spotted roaming near Spooner Tuesday is the second seen in the state since the early 1900s, with the first seen near Milton last year.

Doug Fendry, DNR Wildlife Supervisor, says the cats could both be from South Dakota. That's the closest breeding ground for cougars. He says the area near Spooner could make a better habitat than Rock County, since it's more rural near Spooner and deer are plentiful. DNR officials hope to put a radio transmitter on the cougar and obtain DNA samples to determine its origins.

The cougar seen near Milton last year was killed in Chicago.
