Memorial, West, La Follette, East win tournament openers

Two power spurts got top-ranked Madison Memorial rolling in WIAA Division 1 boys basketball Tuesday night.


The Spartans opened with a 19-9 first quarter and buried Monona Grove in a 26-11 third period for a 71-55 victory in the regional semifinals.


Vander Blue led the Spartans with 24 points, and Jeronne Maymon added 16. Blue fueled Memorial’s third-quarter run with nine points.


Zak Manthe led Monona Grove (4-17) with a game-high 26 points.


Memorial hosts Sauk Prairie (13-8) in Saturday’s regional finals. The winner plays Watertown (10-11) or Madison West (6-15) in the semifinals of the Waunakee Sectional.

n West 46, Baraboo 44—Antonio Golden’s two free throws with seven seconds to go gave Madison West (6-15) an upset victory over the Thunderbirds (16-5) in a Division 1 regional semifinal game at Baraboo.


Baraboo led 44-39 with 2:54 to go before West scored the final seven points to earn a berth in Saturday’s regional title game against the host Goslings (10-11) at Watertown. That winner plays Madison Memorial (20-1) or Sauk Prairie (13-8) in the Waunakee sectional semifinals.


Colin Jarvis led the Regents with 15 points. Chris Siebert scored a game-high 21 to lead the T-Birds, who ended their season with five straight losses after being 16-0 and ranked in the state’s top 10.

n La Follette 60, DeForest 45—After a see-saw first quarter, Madison La Follette (9-12) took control to post a Division 1 regional semifinal victory.


Chris Redman scored 10 of his 16 points in the third quarter to pace the Lancers. Marcus Henley added 12 points, and Lucus DuBois had 10 for La Follette.


Jackson Chesbro scored 11 points for DeForest (9-12).


La Follette (9-12) plays at Waunakee (18-3) on Saturday in a regional title game that leads to the lower bracket of the Waunakee Sectional.

n Sun Prairie 59, Middleton 51—Sun Prairie (9-12) put four players in double figures and used a 24-13 fourth-quarter run to earn a Division 1 regional semifinal win over Middleton (8-13).


Sam Marshall scored 10 of his team-high 17 points in the final quarter. Sun Prairie also hit nine of 10 fourth-quarter free throws.


Michael Boos added 14 points for the winners. Jordan Noskowiak had 13, and Terry Porter had 10 as Sun Prairie advances to Saturday’s regional title game against Madison East (18-3) in the lower bracket to the Waunakee Sectional.


Matt Everson led Middleton with 17 points.

n East 84, Tomah 60—Marquis Mason scored a team-high 15 points as sixth-ranked Madison East (18-3) cruised into Saturday’s regional title game at home Sun Prairie.


East led 44-33 at halftime and put the game away with a 20-8 third quarter for a 64-41 lead.


Marcel Terry added 13 points and DeAndre Galligan added 10 as six Purgolders scored eight or more points.


Joel Sweeney led Tomah (5-16) with a game-high 17 points.
