Badger High wins, Milton falls in regional openers

Lake Geneva Badger passed the first test in its bid for a second straight trip to the boys WIAA Division 1 state basketball tournament.


Justin Bowers sank three of Badger High’s nine three-point goals and finished with a team-high 22 points as the Badgers topped visiting Stoughton, 71-64, in a regional semifinal game Tuesday night.


Badger (12-9) plays top-seeded Beloit Memorial (15-5) in a regional final Saturday at Beloit. The winner faces Janesville Craig (10-11) or Kenosha Tremper (14-7) in the semifinals of the Craig Sectional.


Stoughton (9-12) could not catch Badger despite Jake Thiermann’s game-high 24-point performance. Skip Gerber added 10 points for the Vikings.


Henri Lorenzi scored 12 points for Badger.

n Tremper 61, Wilmot 49—Kenosha Tremper (14-7) pulled away from a 30-29 halftime edge with a 20-8 outburst in the third quarter to reach the Division 1 regional finals.


The Trojans host Janesville Craig (10-11) at 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner plays Beloit Memorial (15-5) or Lake Geneva Badger (12-9) in the semifinals of the Craig Sectional.


Darell Longstreet led the way with 17 points as Tremper ended Wilmot’s season at 4-17.

n Bradford 70, Milton 54—Mason Walters scored a game-high 21 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Red Hawks in a Division 1 regional semifinal loss to host Kenosha Bradford.


Bradford (11-10) plays at Verona (14-7) in a regional final on Saturday. The winner faces Elkhorn (18-2) or Burlington (12-9) in the semifinals of the Janesville Craig Sectional.


Milton (8-13) trailed only 29-22 at halftime, but Bradford rode a 15-9 third-quarter advantage to 44-31 lead.


Zack Akina scored 15 points to lead three Bradford players in double figures. Brandon Knudtson scored 11 points for Milton.

Brian Ironmonger scored 12 points for Oregon. Andrew Smith scored a game-high 20 points for Burlington.


The Demons (12-9) play at second-seeded Elkhorn (18-2) in Saturday’s regional finals. The winner faces Verona (14-7) or Kenosha Bradford (11-10) in the semifinals of the Janesville Craig Sectional.
