Janesville Legion hangs on after losing big lead

JANESVILLE — The Janesville American Legion baseball team had its hands full despite a huge early lead over visiting East Troy at Riverside Park on Monday night.

Janesville blasted East Troy with nine runs in the second

inning for a commanding 11-0 lead, but East Troy refused to wilt and Janesville had to dig deep to preserve an 11-8 victory.

“We built an 11-0 lead but had to scramble,” Legion coach Ron Pohlman said. “It almost came right down to the wire.’’

Janesville scored nine runs—seven unearned—on five hits and two errors in the second inning for the 11-0 lead after two innings.

East Troy bounced back with three runs in the third, a run in the fourth and four in the fifth to pull within 11-8.

Janesville reliever Zach Bayreuther finally shut the door, blanking East Troy for the final 1 2/3 innings for the save.

Janesville pounded out 11 hits, including Matt Beyer’s

3-for-4 effort with a triple. B.J. Scharenbroch added a triple and three RBIs.

Janesville starting pitcher Dylan Grall gained the victory, allowing seven runs on seven hits through four innings. Grall walked four and struck out five.

Janesville (8-4) will travel to Darien for a doubleheader beginning at 5:45 today.
