Janesville Legion splits slugfest

JANESVILLE — The wind was blowing out at McQuade Field and baseballs were sailing everywhere as the Janesville American Legion split a doubleheader with visiting Oshkosh on Sunday afternoon.

Janesville won the opener, 13-10, and lost the nightcap 10-9. Both games were decided in the seventh inning.

The teams combined to hit seven home runs and 15 other extra-base hits.

“It was quite entertaining baseball,” Legion coach Ron Pohlman said, adding his scorebook “is a mess.’’

Janesville’s Caleb Eichman belted a walkoff three-run homer for the victory in Game 1. Janesville couldn’t produce the same heroics in Game 2, leaving the bases loaded to suffer its third the one-run loss of the season.

The Legion began both games trailing 4-1 after the first inning.

Janesville’s Matt Beyer led the day’s hit parade producing five in hits in seven at-bats, including three home runs and six RBIs.

Reliever B.J. Scharenbroch had the distinction of gaining the victory in Game 1, and absorbing the loss in Game 2.

The Legion (7-4) will host East Troy at 7 tonight at Riverside Park.
