Spartans top Rock Valley soccer
The McFarland girls soccer team made its first season in the Rock Valley Conference a successful one.
The Spartans went 7-0 to win the conference title and placed six players on the all-conference first team.
Walworth Big Foot-Williams Bay, Palmyra-Eagle and East Troy had two players each on the first team, while Evansville’s Haley Petterson was also selected to the first team.
Evansville coach Matt Smith said McFarland was in a league of its own in the Rock Valley.
“The majority of their players are regional or club players year round,” Smith said. “That makes a big difference.
“But other than McFarland, and maybe a couple of teams at the bottom of the standings, the Rock was a very well-balanced conference.”
McFarland’s first-team selections were midfielders Sara Stern and Jacie Jermier, midfielders Jenny Ujke and Stephanie Ward, defender Ashley Alonso and goalkeeper Kristi Frisch.
Petterson was having another solid season before tearing her ACL against Clinton midway through the schedule. The senior still ended up as the team’s leading scorer.
“Haley was by far our most talented player,” Smith said. “She was the link between our offense and defense.
“Our season was kind of over after her injury because she was our only senior and our team leader.”
Petterson, who had season-ending knee surgery, will play soccer at Mankato State (Minn.) next fall.
Junior midfielder Becca Hobbs and senior defender Dana Grant were Walworth Big Foot/Williams Bay’s first-team selections.
East Troy senior defender Bethany Weber and sophomore forward Caysi Shouse are on the first team.
Palmyra-Eagle’s Jill Sinkoff repeated on the first team. The senior, who led the Panthers to the Division 3 state tournament in 2008, was joined on the first team by senior teammate Sam Szymkowski.
