Janesville Legion hangs on in high-scoring game

JANESVILLE — A big inning and a big night for the bottom of the batting order paid off for Janesville’s American Legion baseball team.

With seven hits and seven RBIs from the Nos. 7, 8 and 9 hitters, Janesville built a 12-7 lead in a seven-run fourth inning and held on for a 12-10 win over Richmond, Ill., in a Lakes Area Region 7 League game at Riverside Park.

“It was a slugfest, a real battle. But we came out on top,’’ said Janesville coach Ron Pohlman, whose team withstood Richmond’s 14 hits.

Left fielder Keith Wright, the No. 7 hitter, set the pace for Janesville with a 4-for-4 night that included three RBIs as the home team (6-2, 5-0).

Second baseman David Jacobson and third baseman B.J. Scharenbroch, the Nos. 8 and 9, hitters, also had two RBIs apiece for Janesville. First baseman Tyler Teubert, the clean-up hitter, had a solo home run in the Janesville fourth.

Kaleb Eichman and Wright each had RBI doubles in helping Janesville grab a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Janesville collected six hits in the seven-run fourth. Wright started the outburst with a leadoff single and scored the inning’s first run on a single by Scharenbroch. Three runners crossed the plate after a single by Eichman, who was credited with two RBIs.

Eichman, the winning pitcher, was replaced by Zach Bayreuther with one out in the seventh and Richmond’s tying runs on base. After a hit batsman, a double play finally ended the game.

Janesville returns to action at 7 tonight against Kenosha at Carthage College.
