The Janesville American Legion baseball team had a break even weekend.

Janesville wrapped up the 5-Star Tournament on Sunday night by rallying for an 8-7 win over Union Grove at Riverside Park. The victory counted as a Lakes Area Region 7 League game as two-time defending champion Janesville improved to 3-0.

In Sunday’s first game, Janesville lost 6-5 to Ham Lake (Minn.), and finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

“I think we learned a little bit about ourselves this weekend,” Janesville coach Ron Pohlman said. “You’ve got to be ready to play right away. We went through the motions at times, and that nearly cost us against Union Grove.

“But we lost two one-run games, so a play hit or a play there and we would’ve won the tournament.”

Zach Bayreuther picked up the victory against Union Grove. The Janesville Craig High graduate and All-Big Eight Conference first-team selection did not allow a run in 1 1/3 innings of work.

David Jacobson had two hits and scored two runs for Janesville (4-2 overall), while Keith Wright had two hits and drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the seventh as Janesville rallied for three runs in its last at bat.

Ham Lake banged out 10 hits in picking up the win in Janesville’s first game Sunday. Ham Lake won the 5-Star Tournament with a 4-0 record.

Matt Beyer homered and drove in three runs for Janesville in the loss.

“This team is capable of scoring a lot of runs, but we still have to do the other things to be successful. That means good defense and consistent pitching from our starters.”

Janesville will play at Burlington tonight in a Lakes Area League game.
