— It's a story that begins with a child in poverty and ends with fireworks.

It's also a story that gets better every year.

On Saturday, New Life Assembly of God, 2416 N. Wright Road, Janesville will host its eighth annual Freedom Fest.

If you've never been to Freedom Fest, here's what you need to know: The rides are free, the food is reasonably priced and the entertainment includes national Christian acts.

Here's the question other churches, booster groups and service organizations want to know: How do they do that?

Here's how: With more than 350 volunteers, the help of six churches and a variety of revenue sources ranging from donations to advertisements.

The beginning

Many people have heard the story: The Rev. Michael Jackson, New Life's senior's pastor, was raised in poverty.

Not can't-afford-fancy-sneakers poverty, but can't-afford-shoes poverty.

Jackson grew up in a family of nomads, traveling from place to place as his father looked for jobs or the next big break.

Jackson managed to break free from poverty, but never forgot it.

That's where Freedom Fest came from. Jackson wanted to give back to the community while providing a family-friendly event everyone—without exception—could attend.

Every year, the event has grown with better fireworks, different and better rides and increasingly well-known acts.

But one thing hasn't changed: It's always unapologetically Christian—Christian music, Christian skits and music for kids and Christian speakers.

Making something good even better

So how do they do it?

"A good portion of the money comes from the advertising we sell in the program," said the Rev. Todd Pope, family pastor at the church. "Even with a down year in the economy, we sold more ads that ever this year."

Another 20 to 25 percent comes from the congregation and additional money comes from a golf fundraiser. The church also gets a small portion of the food sales.

"This isn't a fundraiser," Pope said. "We're trying to give back to the community."

Their goal is to break even—and last year they came within $15 of that goal.

Volunteers are another crucial factor in the event's success.

More than 350 volunteers work on Freedom Fest activities. Five other churches help on the day of the event.

"There are people who plan their vacation around Freedom Fest so they can be here," Pope said.

People take time off from work so they can spend all day Friday setting up. On Saturday, volunteers from New Life and other churches run the rides, staff the booths and generally make people feel welcome.

The details

-- The rides are free. This year's new ride is a 40-foot Ferris wheel. Other returning favorites include the big slide, bouncy houses, and the "frog hopper" jumping ride, cars or airplanes that spin around, a petting zoo and pirate boat. A separate play area for tiny tots and their parents is also available.

-- Food and drink are reasonably priced. The church required their vendors to take it easy on the customers. Pizza, hamburgers and sweets will all be featured.

No beer or alcohol is allowed on church grounds, but families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets with their own food and drink.

-- The entertainment. Big Daddy Weave is this year's headliner.

Between 2002 and 2008, Big Daddy Weave, a contemporary Christian band has had five albums in Billboard's Christian and "heatseeker" top 20.

Chad James, a Christian singer-songwriter from Walworth County, will open for the group.

Also new this year is the "Splat Experience." An artist creates an image of Christ on a huge canvas while music plays in the background.

FF is great...... all of you commplaining need to get a life.......we know were your gunna end up when your gone......its put on mostly for the children of the community, how is that bad.....grow up, kids are our future , if we dont teach them about god and morals and belief, they'll end up doing drugs and on the streets....i know my kids wont be cause were active in a church....dont cry to other ppl when your kids are pregnant or doing drugs.....its all in how you raise them and when your in the church and your family is about god your chances are less likey to have wild children.... freedom feast is for kids to come have fun enjoy the day with the family.... its a great event to go to even if your not in a church.....how can ppl be against this celebration....if thats the case then maybe they should have the janesville fair either then cause thats pretty much the same ordeal...so stop complaining if you are against it then keep it to yourself and dont come we wouldnt want you there anyways....get a life....god id great...god bless

Irish Mafia and CallitasIseeit, thanks for the chuckles on this uneventful day! Funny stuff, lol. That is unless you call a visit from the AC repairman eventful or funny in this smothering humidity. Sure hope it cools some for FF. Wife is 5 months along with Zachary and she cannot stand the heat much. Course the air is broke today at her work also :O( What did we do before AC?

I am agnostic too, but I love this day every year. My nieces and nephew love the fireworks and it's just fun. I have never went over the watch the shows but I can hear the music, and it's nice to have some background music for the cookout across the street. My brother in law is in a christian band and it's actually really good, Creed was a christian band and half the people I know didn't even know it.... I think people need to lighten up a bit and remember how lucky we are to have this great event in our community... and if you don't believe in its cause, which is simply giving back and remembering that when times are tough you appreciate the little things a little bit more, then at least sit back and enjoy the fireworks and remember that you are a free person... you have the right to choose where you live, eat, walk and drive. You have the freedom to be whatever you want to be, and that you should at least celebrate with a smile and some fireworks.

CallitasIseeit, I was more commenting at the generalization that has historically been made and will be made re:this festival. . . . . waits for comments on why the citizens have to pay for traffic control . . . .

A church does something positive and it becomes all about money and evil and brainwashing. What ever happened to the good things that churches do for the community. New Life is a good community church that does many good things for the community. Here's some very good advice. If you don't like it, don't go. If you don't like the fireworks get some ear plugs or shoot some off in your own yard...

I heard there was a secret trap door that dropped people into the bunker during the fest. Then they brainwash the people to their style of Christianity and on the joys of RLUIPA and then reintroduce them into the crowd to convert others in their plot to take over the EARTH!!!!

"What fun is a "a well secured and safe place for the whole family, positive music " why not visit a underground bunker for fun?"

I've heard some wild stories about the alleged undeground "Armageddon bunker" that New Life supposedly has. Story has it, that New Life has a bunker that is bigger than the church and that's why there's so much land around the building. There's also supposedly a tunnel that goes over to Wal*Mart for supplies. The bunker supposedly has rations, living quarters and supplies to sustain the congregation until the Rapture occurs.

I doubt it's true... but it's something to think about.

We love the Freedom Fest and the churches do a great job each year bringing wonderful entertainment and fun.

I am disappointed that this years event includes an artist who creates images of what he thinks Jesus looks like. Many Christians hold the conviction that this is a second commandment violation. I do wish New Life would reconsider that performance. Other than that, we are excited about this years program.

Yeah, I am not very Christian but will go to Freedom Fest regardless this year for the first time and bask in the positive karma!

Sure as Hell beats a Marilyn Manson or Eminem concert even if Riverfest or 4H wanted to book them.

Proartist-No RUPLA mention? I'm proud of you. Sit at home wrapped in a blanket reading Rasputin if you don't like fireworks. What does the Pope have to do with this church? Why would a free (yeah rockstars, they'll fill their coffers on this one) non-alcohol event a week before the 4Th be a bad thing. Prounion, if you are showing up at the booth I would come to watch. I've never been there, probably never go, but I just don't see why anyone has a problem with this.

Acer, I'm sure the church would have wanted to have the fireworks on July 4th except that the city would have probably not given them a permit for it since the Jaycee's and the city want to put their show on the 4th.
.
And, of course, they would have a better turn out on a weekend as opposed to, let's say, July 2nd or 3rd. More money to go into the church's coffers (sp?)!!!

Historically churches mixed with nationalistic and political fervor is a dangerous combination no matter how much fun it may appear to be a given moment. This doesn't demonstrate community goodwill and generosity by New Life ("Pope said. "We're trying to give back to the community.") but rather an effort on a secular national holiday to create a schism between the general community (Odd Fellows sponsored event) and self-serving ("It's always unapologetically Christian...") connotations of superior righteousness.

.
And yes, I did see that Julianne Hough will be at the fair. I was actually pretty surprised that the fair was able to secure her. Not my kind of music but she's gonna be a huge country/dancing/etc. star. She's got talent, the looks, and she can sing and dance. She's smart, too! She should be a huge inspiration for young girls in the US. A real class act role model.

Great. As if only country music at the 4-H fair wasn't bad enough. We also get Christian music from Freedom Fest every year. Thankfully I can't hear it from my house. I realize it's done through the church but can't anyone book a decent rock act? Man. I'll watch the fireworks from my house but I'll certainly be avoiding the festivities.
