Win caps off all-star coach's return

— Judy Harms had a happy return to basketball coaching.

In her first game since suffering a brain aneurysm in December, the Whitewater High coach saw her Division 2 South girls all-stars gain a 65-61 victory over the North on Saturday morning at Madison Area Technical College.


The South took a 45-36 lead into the fourth quarter of the game for state high school graduated seniors, then held off a comeback that brought the North within 61-58 with 1:19 remaining. Ripon’s Taylor Wurtz, an AP first-team all-state selection, then made two free throws to give the South a 63-58 lead with 19 seconds left.


After the North pulled within 63-61 on a three-point goal by Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau’s Sami Weaver with nine seconds remaining, Grafton’s Sarah Eichler got to the line one second later and clinched the victory with two free throws.


Wurtz, a University of Wisconsin recruit, led the South with 16 points. Eichler, a UW-Green Bay recruit and the state Player of the Year for the Division 2 state champions, had 13. Brodhead’s Kristen Ruchti, a UW-Parkside recruit, had six for the South.

n North 82, South 79—Colfax’s Courtney Doucette hit a three-point shot with two seconds left to put the crowning touch on the North’s major comeback in the Division 3 girls game at Madison Tech.


The South led 27-9 after the first quarter, 44-29 at halftime and still 77-70 with just over two minutes left. The North finally took a 79-77 lead on a basket and free throw by Osseo-Fairchild’s Katey Wrobel with 51 seconds left, but the South tied it at 79-79 on a basket by Wisconsin Heights’ Ali Wilkinson with 34 seconds to go.


After a timout with five seconds left, Doucette hit the winning shot on an assist from Wrobel, who shared team scoring honors with 18 points.


Algoma’s Samantha Zastrow also had 18 points for the North, while Wilkinson led the South with 22.

n South 60, North 56—The South all-stars scored the last four points to complete their victorious comeback in the Division 4 girls game at Madison Tech.


Husisford’s Skyla Kuehl scored with 16 seconds left to break a 56-56 tie. Weston’s Lindsey Solchenberger made two free throws with two seconds remaining to seal the victory.


The North led 19-10 after the first quarter, but the South’s steady comeback reached a peak with a 19-11 advantage in the final period.


Kuehl and Pecatonica’s Brittany Kent led the South with 14 points apiece. Wausaukee’s Hillary Arthur had 15 for the North.
