— The Division 2 Wisconsin Coaches Association all-star game wasn’t much of a game Saturday morning.

The South, which included Miles Hookstead of Whitewater, Bryan Gregory of Edgerton and Evansville’s Andrew Keister, ran away from the North with a 24-4 first-quarter advantage and coasted to the 95-53 victory at the UW Field House.

Hookstead closed out the opening quarter with a baseline jumper for four points in the blitz. The University of Dubuque football and basketball recruit finished with 15 points after making five of his eight shots.

“We played well,” Hookstead said of the 42-point victory. “We played well as a team. Everyone was hitting shots, and playing in the Field House, it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Seven players scored in the first quarter as the South ran off 17 unanswered points to break away from a 2-2 start. Derek Braucht of Madison Edgewood had six points in the quarter and finished with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Gregory made six of his nine shots for 12 points, including a two-handed dunk in the final minute of the game. Keister finished with five points.

“The thing that really helped us was no one was really worried about how many points they got,” Gregory said. “We just came out and had fun.”

The fun was all on the South side, as the lead grew to 50-18 by halftime. The North misfired on 15 of its 17 first-quarter shots and made just eight of 38 first half shots (21 percent) as the South pulled away.

Hookstead had a breakaway dunk in the final minutes of the first half, and Gregory added a reverse lay-up to help the South push its lead to 50-16. The UW-Stevens Point recruit also opened the second half with a nifty assist to a breaking Braucht for an easy lay-up for one of his four assists.

“I knew we had a good team, but I guess we just turned it on when we needed to,” said Keister, who had five fouls, but did not foul out. “It was a really fun playing with all these guys and making great plays. It is so easy to play with these guys.”
