— Wilmot High School, long recognized as a Southern Lakes Conference baseball power, has a chance to wear the WIAA state crown for the first time in 39 years.

The Panthers gained a spot in the Division 1 title game by completing a Tuesday sweep at Fox Cities Stadium with a 4-0 semifinal victory over Eau Claire North.

Weather permitting, Wilmot (24-5) will go after its first state championship since 1970 open-class competition when it faces Bay Port at 6 p.m. Thursday. It will be the Panthers' first appearance in the finals since being Class B runner-up to Kimberly in 1989.

Bay Port (25-5) defeated Middleton, 3-2, on Dominic Utrie’s bases-loaded single off Shane Adler in the bottom of the seventh inning in a semifinal that ended at midnight.

Wilmot nipped Kimberly, 4-3, on Jason Tenhagen’s RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning of Tuesday morning’s quarterfinals.

Joe Felgenhauer and Brendon Hayden singled with two outs to set up Wilmot’s winning rally. Tenhagen hit a drive to left field that scored Felgenhauer and broke a 3-3 tie.

Wilmot stopped Eau Claire North (20-5) on Quincy Berg’s two-hit pitching. Fourth- and fifth-inning singles produced the only base-runners for the Huskies, who had 12 hits and a 10-run inning in an 18-1 quarterfinal win Tuesday morning over Milwaukee Riverside.
