To help

If you'd like to help the Janesville Odd Fellows raise money for fireworks, send a check to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, 22 N. Main St., Janesville, 53545. Or, you can make a donation at either Janesville Anchor Bank location, 2215 Holiday Drive or 100 West Racine St. Let the teller know you'd like to donate to the Odd Fellows fireworks fund.

— "OOOOooooo! Aaahhh!"

That's what people say when they see fireworks.

"Ohhhh boy."

That's what people say when they're trying to raise money for fireworks.

As of Monday, about one-third of the $20,000 needed for Janesville's fireworks has been raised, and organizers are hoping for last-minute donations.

This year, Janesville's Independent Order of Odd Fellows Wisconsin Lodge 14 is running the three-day Fourth of July celebration that includes fireworks.

It's a job the group took over from the Janesville Jaycees in January—which is fairly short notice in fundraising terms.

"We sent letters to about 200 local businesses," said Barry Golden, event committee chairman and vice grand of the Odd Fellows.

Unfortunately, they didn't get much response.

The Odd Fellows knew it wouldn't be easy to raise money in a tight economy, so they scaled back from a $30,000 fireworks show to a $20,000 show.

They also had to pay for a variety of permits and licenses, and are still searching for affordable liability insurance.

But the show will go on.

"The fireworks will be here next week," Golden said.

This year's event runs from Thursday, July 2, to Saturday, July 4, at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex on Wuthering Hills Drive. The Odd Fellows wanted to use Traxler Park, but park grounds are still recovering from last summer's flood.

Thursday, July 2, will be family fun and youth day with no beer sales.

Friday and Saturday will feature a carnival, food, vendors, a beverage tent and fireworks.

I know they could use a semi to transport things across town. Any volunteers?

I will gladly take whatever they provide! Thanks Odd Fellows!

I wonder if more volunteers would help keep costs down?

I know I may be an "odd fellow" on this point, but I always thought the Jaycees fireworks went on about half again as long as they should be. After about 40 minutes things just seem to repeat. I'd be happier with a really great 40-minute show instead of a merely good 60-minute show.
