Something rotten in America

— One thing we can conclude from David Letterman’s bad jokes about Sarah Palin: He hasn’t flown commercial in a while.

Letterman’s “slutty flight attendant” remark about Palin was in poor taste, we can all agree. But it was a joke, and Letterman is a comedian. The joke probably would have been shrugged off and forgotten—Palin proved her humorous good sportsmanship on “Saturday Night Live” during the campaign—if not for Letterman’s sexually suggestive “joke” about her daughter.

Everyone knows by now that Letterman made fun of the Palin family’s trip to New York last week. He quipped that Palin’s daughter got “knocked up” by Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez during the 7th inning. Unable to stop his slide into the gutter, he said the hardest part of the visit was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter.

Ba-da-bad. Alas, the only daughter with Palin was 14-year-old Willow.

Sorry, Dave, not funny. It was a joke according to stand-up formula—take two disparate news items and combine them in an unexpected way. No one does this better than humor columnist Andy Borowitz, who has the blogosphere in a snit with his column suggesting that Newt Gingrich accused Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor of faking her broken ankle to get sympathy.

It was a JOKE!

The flight attendant line is a grown-up joke that one might or might not think is funny—though my guess is that many of the offended big brothers out there were happy to participate in the Palin-as-sexy-librarian fantasy. Fess up.

In any case, the joke was about an adult voluntarily in the public arena and, therefore, clearly of a different order than suggesting sexual relations between a child and a man. We call that rape. Letterman’s sort-of apology fell short of fixing things. He didn’t mean the 14-year-old daughter, he said. He meant the 18-year-old.

Sir, may I offer you a shovel? Or, perchance, a backhoe?

Letterman was way off base and should apologize sincerely. But, please, may we stop there?

Calls for censorship or worse are far more dangerous to the land of the free than any inappropriate one-liner. John McCain—ever the chivalrous warrior—sallied forth with his own disapproving statement Thursday, saying: “They (the Palins) deserve some kind of protection from being the butt of late-night hosts.”

They DO? Are we talking vigilantes—or just good ol’ government censorship?

No, the Palins don’t deserve protection from late-night hosts. No one does. But children deserve protection from adults who have lost sight of their responsibility to be wardens of the innocent. And parents are the best guardians of their children. Keeping them out of the limelight seems a good starting point. And, no, I’m not suggesting that anyone “asked for it.”

The Palin jokes, for lack of a better term, were merely the latest in a string of recent hostile treatments of women—conservative women in particular. The Playboy magazine Web site listing conservative women whom men would like to have “hate” sex with was beyond the pale. The harsh treatment of poor Miss Runner-Up California when she expressed her opinion that marriage should be between a man and a woman was simply unfair.

Opinions don’t get punished in this country. Period.

But we do have a problem, don’t we? Simply put, the Zeitgeist has become mean and nasty, and we’re at a loss as to how to fix it. Here’s one thought: The Internet—which, ironically, contributes to the problem—might be the best solution possible.

Both gift and curse, the Internet has been so revolutionary and its gifts so immense that we’ve been like inmates in sudden possession of the keys. Instant access to a bullhorn and the world as one’s stage has unleashed a monstrous id, that undisciplined, infant part of the human psyche that wants what it wants when it wants. Multiply that by billions, and civilization is one harried nanny.

Thus, we have hate-sex Web pages and millions of others that degrade women, sexualize children and leave man- and womankind to their basest instincts. Such is the profoundly messy, sometimes frightening, part of free expression.

On the other hand, we also have the passionate voices of sensible Americans, who won’t let a comedian get away with trivializing rape. Which suggests that the best defense against rude comics is not “some kind of protection,” but the rallying cry of people who demand more from their society and themselves.

I think he is a disgusting piece of dirt! Does he not remember that his only child was conceived out of wedlock too and he has never married the woman he sired a child with!?! also I don't think he'd get away with these kind of remarks if he made them about the Obama girls! They are children just like this child! NOT FUNNY DAVE!!!! Of course the liberal media says we should just laugh at it, it was a joke!! It was a cut at Palin because she is a conservative which dave cannot stand. PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!!!!

Bad joke, bad reaction from everyone.
.
I don't watch letterman so I am not sure not "crude" is usually gets but this was bad.
.
The second apology, on stage was very classy and necessary. The protests now seem like a waste.
.
I love hearing guys like Hannity try to compare himself or even defend Don Imus by comparing Don to David Letterman.
.
Memo to Hannity. Letterman is a comic and while I find your view of the world sad and sometimes instead of crying I laugh, you are suppose to be a news person as was your buddy Don.
.
Oh and BTW, didn't DI's comments border on racism, I can't remember the exact comments but I believe that was some of the outrage.
.
Letterman apologized, Palin says she accepts the apology time to move on.

Letterman was funny a couple of times in 1982 or so. He ran out of material very quickly, within a year or so. It is astounding that anyone watches him. That says a lot about the country, I guess.

Letterman grovels after sex joke about Palin's daughter
8:25AM Wednesday Jun 17, 2009
.
"It was a coarse joke, a bad joke," a contrite Letterman admitted during Monday night's edition of The Late Show. "The joke, really, in and of itself can't be defended... I'm sorry about it, and I'll try to do better in the future."
.
Say what you like, but when advertisers start pulling out of shows it doesn't seem so funny anymore.

I encourage my kids to have a sense of humor. We poke fun of each other all the time. We are the butt of each other's jokes. Are we trying to be demeaning and degrading? And you know what?-They are so kind and helpful to people.
If you took Lettermans joke to be more than what it was meant to be-you're the one who's sick.

Letterman’s “joke” was not made to be funny. It was made to degrade and demean (to undermine the status or dignity of) another individual through the use of another – in this case a child. It is shameful that people are telling their daughters to tolerate this type of degradation and telling their sons that this is acceptable behavior.

I am tired of people like yourself who plop your kids in front of a TV and complain that your offended by what's on TV. Stop whining and take your kid to a park or for a bike ride. opinions~ I'm not hurt or offended by any of this garbage. I'm embarassed that our society finds this media acceptable. What ever happened to morals and values? The media today isn't as easy as unplugging a TV, or a radio or a PC! The media is all around us whether we like it or not. You can't just shut it off! Get in touch with reality. The media is plugged into US! Parents can do their part in limiting the media their kids come in contact with only to a certain point. There are parents raising the next generation of so called "leaders" who were raised on this same garbage and what do you suppose the end result will be?? Look around you! 30 years ago kids were being expelled for chewing gum in school....today they're being expelled for having guns! If you're offended that this weighs heavy on my heart, so be it! Mock me if you like....people like me expose the cowards that exist out there today. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Pick a side. If you choose to remain part of the problem, don't complain when you're violated by someone who is just acting out what they've been taught! Wake up.

Some parents are the best guardian's for their own children. This deal with Letterman is a clear cut case of reaping what we sow! Public TV has allowed cursing, infidelity, nudity, murder to seep into the public conscience for years and it's offended many people in the process. Why has this been okay? Because it PAYS! Letterman is on the air with CBS because his show PAYS. I don't agree one iota with what Letterman said regarding Palin, however, I'd rather all our couch potatoes see that than a constant dose of murder and mayhem on a daily basis like is being forcefed. There are some terrific parents out there who are wise enough to censor what their children watch and listen to, however, the parents who were educated their whole life on this garbage media to become "unwise" are oblivious to the fallout from this media which means they have no idea what it's doing to their children who become friends with the censored children. One thousand gallons of fresh water mixed with one gallon of raw sewage, becomes sewage. We're losing this battle because morals and values have become compromised for the almighty dollar and the greedy people who are above those morals and principles are winning the battle of our society's minds!

Try the facts...I know it is hard for you some time.

From the show; Rush quoted from the David Hinckley article “In: A cute kid in the White House. Out: Cute dog in the White House.” Could– could we see the cute kid? Let’s take a look at– see who is the cute kid in the White House. A picture of the “cute dog” (Millie) appeared on the screen instead of the “cute kid” (Chelsea). Rush immediately said No, no, no. That’s not the kid. Then a picture of Chelsea Clinton came on the screen and Rush said That’s– that’s the kid.

Again, he never said she was the white house dog...as you declared. But don't let the truth get in the way of what you "think" happened.

The joke was in bad taste and anyone who doesn't think so obviously has never had a 14 year old daughter or one who was butt end of a sexual joke relating to an older man. It just isn't funny. Those would be fighting words for any dad or mom in America. The only reason Letterman has gotten a pass on this, is because he is a liberal and so is most of the media. When it comes to children, the media needs to put political preference aside. Palin went back to Alaska, the election is over, and comedians need new material. It was funny joking about Palin six months ago, now it's just old hag. What bothers me, is that if this was a racial "joke", Letterman would be suspended or fired. However, it's OK to joke about a 14 year old girl having sex with an older man. There seems to be a double standard. I'm surprised more moms aren't PO'd over this or does the fact the Letterman likes Obama give him a pass on being tasteful?

Letterman was way off-base. This was a scripted joke, he had approved it before the show even started. Somehow because Palin is a Republican, some people think this is okay? Or have our standards fallen so low that the children of politicians can now be joked about being raped by steroid-using idiots? Remember when Clinton was in office? No one dared utter the name of Chelsea Clinton unless it was in a favorable light. It was understood that the children of politicians are off-limits when it comes to either criticism or humour. Even the daughters of George W. Bush were pretty much left alone, unless they did something to put themselves in the news. But now we can make a joke about raping a 14-year-old, and that passes for humour? That's just sick.

Palin set herself up as a public figure and as such is subject to the satire and jibes of comedians. If we set up a public media council to decide the good from the bad jokes we are on a one way street to censorship. Can't we just all agree, that Letterman and others of his ilk, splatter public figures with bad jokes. That's their job. Palin isn't the first and won't be the last.
