— Lakeside Lutheran High School is headed to the WIAA state baseball tournament for the first time.

The Warriors earned a trip to Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute by knocking off two perennial powers—Waupun, 5-4 in 10 innings, and Wisconsin Lutheran, 6-1—on Wednesday to win the rain-delayed Chilton Sectional.

Lakeside (19-8) plays Bloomer in the Division 2 state semifinals at 6 p.m. next Wednesday. Madison Edgewood faces Fox Valley Lutheran at 8:30 p.m., and the winners play for the championship at 3 p.m. next Thursday.

Tyler Guenterberg scored for Lakeside on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 10th in the sectional semifinals to keep Waupun from the state tournament for the first time in four seasons.

Wisconsin Lutheran advanced with a 1-0 win over Racine Lutheran/Prairie.

In the title game, Cole Strohbusch hit a two-run homer and Guenterberg hit a three-run home run to lead Lakeside. The Warriors scored three runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth.

Brian Klug pitched four scoreless innings of relief against Waupun and pitched three scoreless innings as the starter against Wisconsin Lutheran.

Lakeside coach Jerry Hahn said the Warriors reached their goal.

“It’s what the kids were shooting for all year. We’ve got quite a few seniors,” said Hahn who has coached Lakeside for 12 seasons. “But you never know. It’s one and out, and you don’t dare stub your toe.

“We played errorless ball, so we didn’t give anybody extra outs.’’
