June 10, 2009
— Janesville Craig High School’s baseball team is returning to the WIAA Division 1 state tournament for the first time since 2001.

The Cougars outlasted Oconomowoc, 9-7, in a sectional semifinal game here Tuesday, then avenged two regular-season losses with a 5-4 championship victory over Madison West to earn the school’s 12th trip to state.

West edged Madison Memorial, 2-1, in the first semifinal game, ending the Spartans’ bid for a fifth straight state tournament trip.

Craig (21-5), the Big Eight runner-up, plays Big Eight champion Middleton in the state quarterfinals at 1 p.m. next Tuesday at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.
