Charles Friedrich is not promising a quick turnaround for the Janesville Craig High School boys soccer program, but he is promising an exciting brand of play.

Friedrich has been named the Cougars’ head boys coach after Dave Adler resigned following last season.

“I’ve been coaching soccer for a number of years, and I see soccer potential in Janesville all over the place,” Friedrich said. “I’m hoping to share the things I’ve learned about the game growing up in Germany, and get kids excited about this great game.

“It starts with getting the program back to where it needs to be in order to be successful. And that means a dedication and a commitment from each and every kid.”

Friedrich, who was born in Munich, Germany, and works for the federal government, has been active in the youth soccer program in the area for the past five years. He hopes to start a club program at the high school level that rivals those in the Madison and Milwaukee areas.

“Make no bones about it. We’re competing against teams that play soccer year-round,” Friedrich said.

“My goal is to make the game fun for kids and concentrate on teamwork. In my system, everybody is inclusive. I’m a north/south kind of guy who likes to attack, and will let kids be creative.

“This is a challenge I’m really looking forward to.”
