— The Rock Aqua Jays water ski shows scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, and Sunday, June 7, have been canceled because of high water.

This brings to 37 the number of shows canceled since August 2007, said Joel Shapiro, club president.

The Rock River continues to drop, but a slow, no wake restriction remains in effect. The ongoing high water also has delayed the start of work on the team’s stage and retaining wall. The team hopes their contractor will be able to start work sometime this week.

The team has been hard hit by flooding, first in August 2007 and then all of 2008. In addition to having canceled more than three-dozen shows, the team had to relinquish hosting the 2008 national tournament, resulting in an estimated loss of $2 million in local tourism spending. The team has suffered lost revenue and property damage exceeding $250,000, Shapiro said.

The Aqua Jays normally perform semi-weekly free water ski shows from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The team is nonprofit and receives no public funding.
