— Edgerton High junior Dan Ozga and Madison Edgewood’s Shane Sweeney each carded a par 72 to tie for medalist honors Monday in the WIAA Division 2 sectional golf tournament hosted by Edgewood at Yahara Hills.

Ozga qualified for his second straight state tournament at University Ridge, which is next Monday and Tuesday.

The Crimson Tide’s No. 1 player had six birdies to highlight his round and had a chance to card a second straight sub-par round but three-putted his final green.

“Dan likes playing at Yahara Hills. He did a nice job,” Edgerton coach Drew Wellman said of Ozga, who shot a 1-under-par 70 to share medalist honors with Edgewood’s Cody Strang, last year’s Division 2 state medalist, in last week’s regional at Grand Geneva.

Ozga finished 19th in his first state appearance as a sophomore. Wellman thinks Ozga can make a larger statement.

“He’s pretty seasoned,” Wellman said. “He plays a ton of summer tournaments and a lot of adult tournaments. He can handle the pressure.’’

Edgewood, last year’s state runner-up, posted a 292 to win the sectional title and earn a state team berth. McFarland advanced as the sectional runner-up with a 317, while Edgerton shot 350 to finish 10th in the 12-team field.

Jake Cole, an individual sectional qualifier from Brodhead, fired a 77 to earn a three-way tie for third, but Jade Royston of Wisconsin Dells won a playoff for the remaining state berth. Platteville’s Josh Udelhofen (75) also advanced.

Individual qualifiers Jake Meredith of Walworth Big Foot and Chris Meredith of Evansville shot 83 and 86, respectively.
