Parkview teachers have tentative contract deal
ORFORDVILLE — Teachers in the Parkview School District likely will return to school this fall with a settled contract.
The school board and the teachers union reached an agreement on the 2009-2011 contract, but it won't be voted on until Aug. 26, Superintendent Steve Lutzke said.
The agreement provides a 3.9 percent increase in salary and benefits in each of the years, along with minor language changes, he said.
"We're fairly confident that it will get approved," he said.
Teachers will vote on the contract in the afternoon Aug. 26. If they approve it, the school board will hold a special meeting to vote that night, he said.
"This is a very positive affect on the climate in the district when you can start the year with those things resolved," he said. "We're real excited about what this means for us … because it shows trust and respect on both sides of the table."
The negotiations were efficient, Lutzke said, noting that both parties agreed to the contract on only their second meetings.
"I think both sides came in with some reasonable expectations," he said.
Parkview School District will wait on referendums
The Parkview School District will wait until next year to go to referendum for capital projects and revenue cap limits.
"Our hope would be either February or April," Superintendent Steve Lutzke said.
The district wants to hold focus group meetings in August and September to get more feedback about referendum possibilities, he said. The district would have some sessions with invited key community stakeholders and some general sessions for the public, he said.
The district has identified three needs that could turn into three referendum questions: operating expenses, maintenance and technology improvements.
The district got mixed results from a community survey it conducted in May. Residents were asked to complete the 24-question survey on the district's Web site or in the school's Parkview Voice newspaper, which is mailed to the 2,700 households.
The district received 283 completed surveys, a response rate of about 10.5 percent.

Please explain that statement and also explain how taxpayers that are on a fixed income can come up with the money to pay for that instead of paying for food or medical care?

Congratulations to all involved in the contract negotiations. Parkview is a great school district. The students, staff, and teachers deserve to have a great learning environment. Parkview School District must build new high school. Parkview District residents, please support your local high school. What was good building in 1960 is no longer up to standards in 2009. If we don't take care of what is ours locally, we will all be paying taxes, most likely much higher, in another district.
