A two-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning kept the Janesville 14-year-old Babe Ruth team alive in the state tournament Thursday afternoon.

Adam Greene’s double scored Ryan Marro and Dalton Johns with the winning runs in an 8-7 win in eighth innings as the local team improved to 2-1 in the double-elimination tournament at Eau Claire.

Janesville plays Wausau in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. today. If the local team wins, it will play again at 4 today.

Janesville coach Pat Campbell says his team knows it can beat Wausau, an opponent who beat the local squad, 3-1, Wednesday night.

“Without a doubt,” Campbell said. “We really should have beat them (Wednesday) night. We committed five or six errors, which has been our bugaboo all tournament.”

Janesville committed four errors Thursday that allowed three unearned runs.

The local 13s took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Marro and an RBI single by Tyler Brooks.

Marinette responded with a five-run fifth when walks hurt Marro, the Janesville starter.

Johns came in to relieve, and held Marinette to one run the rest of the way.

Janesville got to within, 6-5, in the bottom of the fifth on another two-RBI hit by Marro, who finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The local team tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Campbell’s two-out single scored Jared Fish to fend off elimination.

Marinette put the local team in another precarious situation with a run in the top of the eighth.

Janesville rallied to win on Greene’s double with one out.
