Six-run inning lifts 13s past Point

SAUK CITY — A six-run inning put Janesville in command, and the local 13-year-old Babe Ruth tournament team went on to win its state tournament opener here on Wednesday afternoon.

Adam Catacutan drove in three runs, and Troy Malmanger and Colin Powers each added two RBIs in Janesville’s 8-4 victory over Stevens Point. Janesville plays D.C. Everest at 7 p.m. today.

A six-run fourth inning gave Janesville a 7-0 lead. Stevens Point hung close, and it took a running catch by centerfielder Nate Hoag in the gap with the bases loaded to close out the victory.

“It was kind of nice to get a little breakout inning, but we could never put them away,” Janesville coach Tom Davey said. “We had to have that catch by Nate to close it out. We should have put that team away earlier.”

Malmanger drove in the first Janesville run with a groundout in the second, then drove in Brandon Hughes with a single for the first run in the six-run fourth. Powers added a two-run single, Hoag had an RBI single before Catacutan finished the inning with a two-run single.

Catacutan added an RBI single in the sixth to conclude the Janesville scoring.
