Babe Ruth 14s split state games
EAU CLAIRE Janesville opened the 14-year-old state Babe Ruth Tournament on Wednesday morning defeating Shawano, 2-1, but had problems in the field against Wausau and lost 3-1 to fall into the loser’s bracket Wednesday night.
Dalton Johns pitched a complete game, six-hitter to defeat Shawano, and the local squad scored twice in the top of the seventh to win the opener.
“It was Dalton Johns’ pitching and a lot of good defensive plays behind him,” said coach Pat Campbell. “He only struck out one, so there were a lot of good plays across the board.”
Both Janesville runs were unearned.
“Derek Fish hit a ball up the middle with guys on second and third and two outs,” Campbell said. “The shortstop went for it and it hit his glove and went into the outfield. It was kind of a ’tweener, but they ruled it an error.
Johns scored the tying run, and Adam Greene scored the winning run on the play.
In the night game, Wausau benefited from five Janesville errors.
“We gave them some freebees,” Campbell said.
Janesville was stopped on five hits, scoring its lone run in the second inning.
Colin Frey allowed three runs—one earned—on three hits through the first five innings to take the loss.
Janesville is slated to play the Marinette-D.C. Everest winner at 1:30 this afternoon.
