City council could choose cheaper project instead of bike tunnel

A bike tunnel under Janesville's East Milwaukee Street would be the safest option for pedestrians and motorists.

But Janesville City Council members say they're not prepared to build the tunnel at high cost to the city's taxpayers. Council member George Brunner says he's not surprised the project didn't qualify for stimulus funding, simply because of its scope. He says the council will have to wait to see what the engineering plans are for the street's reconfiguration, which include a roundabout at the intersection with Wuthering Hills Drive.

Council member Tom McDonald, who supports the project, says its a matter of balancing cost, need and safety. He says the council will have to review all options available.

The city recently learned the project will not receive federal stimulus funding. Costs for the project have escalated since the city council first approved it.
