Janesville West rallies for state bid

JANESVILLE — The Janesville West Junior Legion team put on the rally caps Sunday afternoon to earn a trip to the state tournament.

Janesville West scored five times in the bottom of the seventh inning in rallying past Janesville East, 12-11, to win the U-17 District 7 Regional Tournament at Riverside Park.

West (19-8) will open state tournament play in Marinette on Friday at 5 p.m. against the winner of the Shawano Regional

Trailing 11-7 in the seventh, West loaded the bases with one out. Matt Fiedler then doubled to the gap in left to drive in all three runs and cut the lead to 11-10. After a fly out for the second out, Jake Welch singled to score Fiedler with the tying run. Josh Garcia followed with an RBI double to left as Welch scored ahead of the throw to send Janesville West back to state for the first time since 2006.

“We kept battling and battling,” West coach Brian Martin said. “Even when we were down 7-1, I felt like we had a chance to get back in it because of the way we had swung the bats the whole tournament.

“Josh gave us some big innings on the mound when we needed it, and also came up with the big hit to win it.”

Fiedler drove in five runs for the West, and Taran Kobs had three hits.

Austin Geller was 3-for-4 for the East with four runs scored, while Charlie Meyer and Kyle Ausen drove in three runs each.
