13s earn state bid

The Janesville Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-star team is going to the state tournament.

Janesville earned its berth by beating Mt. Horeb, 17-4, in the district tournament at Reedsburg on Thursday. The win guaranteed the Janesville squad would finish in the top three teams in the district, which puts them in the state event.

Janesville is undefeated in the tournament, having outscored three opponents, 41-5. The local squad can win the district by beating the winner of the loser’s bracket in a noon game today. If Janesville loses, the team will have to return to Reedsburg to play Saturday.

“We going there to win it (today),” Janesville coach Tom Davey said.

Janesville scored three times in the first inning. The inning was capped by a two-run homer by catcher Brandon Hughes, a shot that Davey said went about 360 feet.

“It was a bomb,” Davey said.

Janesville put the game away with a 13-run second.

Nate Hoag went 2-for-3, including a triple, with three runs scored and three RBIs. Adam Catagutan went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Greydon Pelkey went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Cullen Osmond went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Troy Malmanger started and pitched two scoreless and hitless innings with a strikeout. Jacob Becher also pitched two shutout innings.

The state tournament is in Sauk City and begins late next week.
