— A UW-Whitewater program dedicated to alcohol awareness was featured in a National Collegiate Athletic Association publication. The "Best of CHOICES" book summarizes the programs of the 114 NCAA Division I, II and III schools that received funding for alcohol education projects from 1998 to 2008.

The three-year grants provided resources to campuses to integrate student-athletes and athletics departments into alcohol-abuse prevention programs.

UW-Whitewater used student-athletes as models. Student-athletes were featured on posters, helped create public service announcements shown at athletic events and trained as peer mentors. Newly educated peer mentors taught students about making smart choices. The group hosted an alcohol-free dance club weekly and incorporated special events into athletic social gatherings including "Midnight Madness" to kick off basketball season.
