UW-Whitewater women fall

EAU CLAIRE — UW-Whitewater has hit a bad stretch of road.

The No. 8 UW-Eau Claire Blugolds pounded the No. 2 Warhawks, 71-50, in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball here Saturday.

It was the second straight WIAC loss for Whitewater, which was upset 62-53 by UW-La Crosse last Wednesday at Whitewater. The Warhawks have suffered their two lowest scoring games of the season back-to-back.

Whitewater drops to 8-3 in the WIAC and into third place, while Eau Claire takes second place at 9-2. Both teams are

17-3 overall.

The Blugolds’ smothering defense held Warhawks leading scorer Tiffany Morton to nine points. Whitewater committed 18 turnovers to Eau Claire’s eight.

The Warhawks shot a season-low 14 of 44, including 4-for-22 from three-point range, for a 31 percent average. Eau Claire shot 41 percent.

While Eau Claire shackled Morton, Eau Claire’s Heather Witt scored a career-high 28 points. Heide Sonntag scored 11 points to pace Whitewater.

The Warhawks’ led through the first seven minutes, but trailed the rest of the way.

The 21-point loss is Whitewater’s worst since an 86-57 defeat at Stevens Point on Dec. 7, 2005, a string of 79 games.

In addition, Whitewater’s total of 50 points is the team’s lowest since a 65-50 loss to Stout on Jan. 27, 2007, a span of 52 games.

Whitewater will host Stout at 3 p.m. this Saturday.
