Jefferson's buzzer-beater nips Edgerton girls in overtime

Jefferson High had to work unexpected overtime Friday night to keep pace in the Rock Valley girls basketball race.

Jessica Splittgerber hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer from the top of the key at the end of the overtime to give the Eagles a 47-44 victory over visiting Edgerton.

The win kept Jefferson (9-4) a half-game behind McFarland (12-4, 10-2) at 9-2 in the Rock Valley North.

Edgerton (6-10, 5-7) led 21-20 at halftime and 35-30 after three quarters. Marie Stettler’s free throw for the Crimson Tide with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter forced a 42-42 tie and the overtime.

Beth Ganser’s basket gave Jefferson a 44-42 lead in the extra period. Meggie Schmidt made the first of two free throws with 50 seconds left, and Stettler made the second of two with 40 seconds remaining to boost Edgerton into the 44-44 tie that lasted until Splittgerber’s buzzer-beater, which came after the Eagles called a timeout with nine seconds left.

Schmidt was the high scorer with 15 points, and Stettler finished with 12. Lindsay Frank led Jefferson with 12, followed by Caylee Cottrell and Ganser with 10 apiece.

n Whitewater 56, Evansville 50—The Blue Devils (2-12, 2-9) cut a 23-15 halftime deficit to 47-44 with three minutes remaining, but they could not finish off the Whippets (5-10, 5-6) in a Rock Valley North game.

Kelsey Harms scored 18 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, including an 8-for-8 performance from the line in the fourth quarter. Harms also made three of Whitewater’s four three-point goals.

Sydney Westrick scored 22 points to place Evansville, while teammates Hailey McIntyre and Callie Reese scored 13 and 10 points, respectively.

n McFarland 77, East Troy 37—McFarland (12-4, 9-2) scored inside and outside at will as it routed visiting East Troy (2-13, 2-9) and stayed atop the Rock Valley North.

Julia Thorson had her way in the paint, scoring 14 points for the Spartans. Teammate Andrea Steinhofer hit five three-pointers for a game-high 15 points, while Kaitlynn Eversoll added 14.

Caitlin Dolan’s 13 points led East Troy.

Dana Lewis led the Brodhead with 16 points. Kristen Ruchti scored 11 points and Alyssa Harding scored 10 points for the Cardinals.

Liz Althoff led Clinton (7-7, 5-6) with a game-high 19 points.

Jordyn Courier scored six of her team-high 15 points in the first quarter for Big Foot. Sarah Thune and Haley Schwartz scored 11 points apiece for Big Foot.

Megan Grover led Turner (0-13, 0-11) with 16 points.
