Mason's heroics carry East past Beloit
The heroics were even greater than imagined Thursday night in a Big Eight boys basketball game everybody expected to be close.
Marquis Mason made an acrobatic fallaway putback shot at the buzzer to give Madison East an improbable, 52-51 victory over Beloit Memorial in the battle for second place at Barkin Arena.
It was the seventh-ranked Purgolders’ 11th straight win, lifting them to 10-2 in the conference and 12-2 overall. The loss dropped 10th-ranked Beloit to 9-3 and 11-3.
Mason finished with 28 points. His shot came after Beloit missed a shot with 12 seconds to play, holding a one-point lead and with East having only four team fouls. The Purgolders missed the shot, but Mason grabbed the ball and falling down, just beat the buzzer with the putback.
A 13-0 run in the third quarter put the Purgolders ahead 39-30.
Jahail Smith had 20 points and Terrell Parks added 17 for Beloit (12-3).
