Talk about rubbing it in.

Elkhorn High’s student section chanted “double digits, double digits” after Delavan-Darien guard Jarrett Fowlkes hit a three-pointer that gave the Comets 11 total points with 5:45 left in the third quarter. Ouch!

But that was only half of the nightmare for the Comets.

Fowlkes’ three-pointer also ended Elkhorn’s a jaw-dropping 34-0 run that included a scoreless second quarter for Delavan-Darien (6-6, 2-3).

After the Comets tied the game at 8-8 with 2:53 left in the first quarter, Elkhorn scored 34 straight points and went on to a 69-38 victory in Southern Lakes boys basketball here Thursday night.

Skyler O’Laughlin had a game-high 17 points, while Eric Bryson and Jordan Lockhart each had 12 to help first-place Elkhorn (10-1, 5-0) maintain a half-game lead over Waterford (8-4, 5-1) in the conference race.

The Wolverines can grab a half-game lead with a victory tonight at Elkhorn.

Meanwhile Elkhorn coach John Handel was just trying to remember if his team had ever put together a comparable run.

“I don’t think we have had too many of those runs, but we’ll take it,” Handel said. “It just kind of snowballed and was really a combination of us getting stops on defense and us knocking down shots. We could see that their emotions were low at the end.”

The Comets’ psyche took its first blow late in the first quarter when the Elks made three long three-pointers to go up 19-8.

Round two consisted of the Elks’ pressure defense pitching a second-quarter shutout and the lanky O’Laughlin scoring nine points to put Elkhorn up 40-8 at halftime.

“We have not shut anybody out before. That was incredible,” O’Laughlin said. “We knew what they (the Comets) were going to run on offense, and we really defended and came out pumped from the start.”

The impressive run carried into the second half when Ross Olson’s runner in the lane completed the 34-point surge.

After his team went scoreless for 13:08 of game action, Fowlkes finally sank his three-pointer to make it 42-11. The Comets actually outscored the Elks 30-29 in the second half, but it was too little too late.
