JANESVILLE — Janesville Craig and cross-town rival Parker hooked up in a thrilling Big Eight Conference gymnastics meet Wednesday at Craig.

Craig High managed a 128.575-126.55 victory to improve to 4-1 in the Big Eight, while Parker slipped to 3-1.

Parker sophomore Erika Whitson won the all-around with a 34.925, posting a school-record 9.5 on floor exercise, which topped her 9.425 school record set as a freshman. Whitson also won the balance beam with a 9.1 mark.

Craig freshman Becky Schneider finished second in the all-around with a 34.275 mark. Schneider, who was hampered by a sprained ankle, won the vault with a 9.1 mark, finished second to Whitson on floor with a 9.1 mark and second to Parker sophomore Emily Mauermann, 8.525-8.174, in the uneven bars competition.

“Mauermann had her best-ever bar routine,” Parker coach Cathy Lehmann said. “She had been working on higher skill levels, and I told her why not go for it.’’

Mauermann finished third in the all-around with a 32.45, and Craig junior Lauren Moran took fourth with a 32.3 mark. Moran finished second in the vault with an 8.5 and second on balance beam with a 9.1.

Craig coach Jean Welch said the Cougars did a nice job of covering for injured and ill teammates.

“They all did a nice job of stepping up,” Welch said. “It was good team effort for us.’’

Craig will compete next Thursday against Madison Memorial. Parker will compete in the Whitewater Invitational on Saturday at UW-Whitewater.
