The battle for first place in Trailways South boys basketball was just that—a battle.
In a tightly contested game, Fall River defeated Williams Bay, 45-43, in overtime Tuesday night at Williams Bay.
As result, the Pirates retained the top spot at 7-0, while the two-time defending champion Bulldogs fell to 6-2, with both losses to Fall River.
Fall River made a layup with less than five seconds remaining in the overtime for the final margin. Williams Bay missed a chance to tie it with one second left.
The Bulldogs trailed 33-28 after three quarters, but they gained an 8-3 advantage in the fourth quarter to force a 36-36 tie and send the game into overtime.
Fall River opened the overtime with a three-point basket. Williams Bay tied it at 43-43, but Fall River followed with the winning basket.
Jack Slovick scored 17 points for the Williams Bay, while teammate Aaron Rogers added 15 points on five three-point baskets. Chris Fauser led Fall River with 18 points, and Dexter Oelke added 12.
