Weather makeup days scheduled

— The makeup days for those winter weather days off school are now set.

Janesville middle and high school students will make up a day on Thursday, Feb. 19. That day had been a day off for students, as is customary for parent-teacher conference week.

Elementary students will make up a day on Thursday, Feb. 26, also a parent-teacher conference day.

Kids still will get the Fridays of those weeks off, so they'll get a three-day weekend instead of four days off.

The Janesville Education Association had approved those makeup days earlier. Both the board and the teachers union had to agree because the school calendar is a part of the teachers' contract.

The JEA and board also agreed to Monday, April 13, as another weather makeup day. April 13 had been scheduled as the last day of spring break.

And both sides agreed that if yet another makeup day is needed this year, it would be on Friday, June 12.

As the calendar now stands, June 11 is the last day of the school year.

The district called off school four times this school year because of weather. The first one was built into the calendar. The next three had to be made up. One of the days was made up Friday.

Board member Greg Ardrey suggested that more snow days be built into the schedule when the new teacher contract is negotiated.

Board member Peggy Sheridan suggested the board give the administration authority to set makeup days in consultation with the union, although it wasn't clear whether the board could legally cede its authority.

People on these boards are so knit-picky. Seriously, I am sure you are not an absolute perfect speller either. If this is what you consider entertainment, picking on other people's spelling, perhaps you should look at getting a life.

I didn't spend my high school time buried in the Webster's like it seems you did. Thank's for ruining the humor in "your permAnent record."

If a day is tacked on in June, I'll bet they do the same thing as last year, which essentially lets the seniors off the hook after semester exams. They can't change exam dates because graduation/invitations/ etc are already printed and ready to go. Everyone else came to turn in textbooks, get grades, yearbooks, etc for a half a day of school - I think I am remembering this correctly...

What actually can be released without consent from one's "permanent record"? I remember hearing that threat all through my school years too.

Where i went to high school the seniors were done 3 days before everyone else. So it wouldn't matter if more days were needed or not. Sometimes it was great to be a senior.

Check the spelling on "PERMENENT" there br549. Maybe missing days of school isn't a good thing?

The district does the best they can in planning and until they can predict the weather 100%, the system will not be perfect.

I think they must have covered the spelling of PERMANENT on that last day....

If they need that last day in June and you don't show up, it will go on your PERMENENT record.

So if there is another snow/cold day used you are going to bring the (craig)high school seniors back the day after graduation? (June 12th) Not that I have a child attending there but it does not make sense to have the kids come back because of poor planning on the districts part.
