Elkhorn High brought out the defense to take down the defending champions in Southern Lakes girls basketball.
Thet Elks put the clamps on Alana Cesarz, Delavan-Darien’s 6-2 sophomore standout, and helped turn the conference race into a wild scramble by knocking off the Comets, 46-36, Tuesday night.
While avenging a 57-56 overtime loss, the Elks broke Delavan-Darien’s eight-game winning streak. That, coupled with Lake Geneva Badger’s 64-61 win over Waterford, left four teams with two conference losses apiece.
Delavan-Darien retained a half-game edge at 6-2, followed by Waterford at 5-2, while Elkhorn and Union Grove jumped back into title contention at 4-2.
Cesarz, the conference’s fourth-highest scorer with 16.9 average, got the game’s first basket at Elkhorn to account for her only two points of the night and Delavan-Darien’s only lead.
Elkhorn led only 11-10 after the first quarter, but the Elks gained some breathing room in a 12-3 second period, during which Courtney Flood’s three-point goal accounted for Delavan-Darien’s only scoring.
Kasey Reeves scored 10 of her 16 points in the first half, and Ashlyn Anderson got seven of her 12 in leading the Elks to a 23-13 command that they never relinquished.
“It was the best game we’ve played defensively and probably the best overall,’’ said Elkhorn coach Jim Henriott, whose team improved to 7-6 for the season dropped Delavan-Darien to 12-2. “We also did a great job of giving them one shot and only one shot.”
Meanwhile, the Comets made only one of 18 shots from two-point range in the decisive first half.
Flood had four three-point goals and 14 points to lead Delavan-Darien, the state’s ninth-ranked Division 2 team, while Mackenzie May backed up Reeves and Anderson with 10 points for Elkhorn.
