Bluebirds knock off state-ranked team

JANESVILLE The Janesville Bluebirds didn’t disappoint another big crowd at the Janesville Skating Center.
Two third-period goals and some stout goal-tending by David Jacobson gave Janesville a 3-2 nonconference victory over Hartland Arrowhead on Tuesday night.
Bluebird coach John Mauermann said the atmosphere matched the game’s intensity.
“It was an outstanding crowd,” Mauermann said. “It was a physical game before a packed house. It was a great high school event.”
Janesville outshot the Warhawks, 12-3, in the first period, but couldn’t get the puck past Arrowhead goalie Nick Cohn.
That allowed the Warhawks to take a 1-0 lead in the second period on Brian Berger’s goal.
“That was frustrating after playing so well,” Mauermann said.
But the Bluebirds responded. With a man advantage three minutes later, Jacobson fed the puck to Ross Mauermann, who spotted senior forward Logan Lemirande in the Arrowhead zone. Lemirande went behind the net and wrapped it around past Cohn to tie the score.
The score remained tied into the third period when Lemirande fed Mike Valentine, who got a quick shot off on Cohn. Cohn blocked it, but senior forward Zach Bayreuther pounced on the rebound and beat Cohn to give the Bluebirds a 2-1 lead just 22 seconds into the period.
Lemirande also had a hand in the third Janesville goal. From the Janesville blue line, Lemirande took a pass from senior Mike Valentine and found Ross Mauermann behind the Arrowhead defense. The senior forward blasted a shot from the left side of Cohn, that beat the goalie on his low side.
The Bluebirds weren’t home free quite yet, even with a 3-1 lead. Because of two penalties, the Bluebirds were down, 5-3, and Arrowhead took advantage just past the midway point of the third period. David Clark’s power-play goal got Arrowhead to within 3-2, but that was all the goals David Jacobson and the Bluebird defense would allow.
“David made 15 saves in the third period,” John Mauermann said. “He really played solid. But Cohn had to make the same saves for them.”
Arrowhead (12-5) came into the game ranked No. 8 in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey poll.
Janesville (9-3), which received honorable mention in the prep poll, has another nonconference home game Thursday against Milwaukee Marquette.
“It’s important to go out and beat a good team,” John Mauermann said of Tuesday’s victory. “We have most of our guys back now, and we can put three lines out there that can compete very, very well.”

SK8 - i do support the kids. I played hockey for 17 years, and played for the bluebirds and was part of the 2005 State Hockey Team. The current goalie from janesville is not Division 1 goalie material and never will be, the goalie is not good. the birds are playing hard and doing a great job. but talent is not in wisconsin anymore, comapred to what it use to be, you have to admit that. GO BLUEBIRDS

Although I don't recall it being that much fun playing agains Mark Johnson. I remember Mr. Horswill asking why we couldn't stop him. Years later I reminded Hugh that the Russians couldn't stop him!

2005 'Birds was being carried by a hot goalie named Max Giese. He ALMOST got them to the title game. Still, there is alot of hockey to play. 'Birds are getting better, but not quite where they wanna be .......Yet. I think Janesville is a little under the radar right now. Let Stoughton and Edgewood get all the headlines around this part of the state. I would put our boys up against them anytime.

There is no doubt that the 2005 team was great ... but that team didn't have a goalie as hot as we have now! This kid is Division 1 material. The entire team deserves a huge CONGRATS! They play very well together and they're only getting better. We'll see them at State and we'll all be there giving them the full support they have earned!
dudefromjsvl - if you can't support the kids in this community, then don't say anything at all!

AWESOME JOB BLUEBIRDS!
I remember skating as a Parker player back in '83-'84. It's nice to see Bluebirds merging Craig & Parker together.
All the more reason to support Janesville Ice Arena improvements.
