— Mercy Health System officials hope to open the first half of a 145-space parking addition at Mercy Hospital by the end of next week.

Workers are finishing one of the three levels of the 90,000-square-foot addition to the hospital, Mercy Vice President Dave Kurtz said. The second level would open first, a parking level where vehicles enter from the parking lot, he said.

“I think anybody that’s had (a visit to the hospital) knows we’ve been challenged on parking for some time,” he said.

The lower level of parking, where vehicles enter from Mineral Point Avenue, likely will open by the end of February, he said. The two parking levels are not connected by a ramp.

“We’re real anxious to get it done,” Kurtz said.

The new building, called Mercy Campus Clinic, is on the east side of the hospital campus and south of the Mercy Regional Cancer Center.

A skywalk will connect the new building’s elevator lobby to the second floor elevator lobby of Mercy Clinic West.

The third floor of the building is scheduled to open in early fall.

That level will house the departments of medical oncology, urology and neurosciences, relieving some of the space crunches in the existing building, Kurtz said. The third floor also will house the offices for a new department of trauma services.

Mercy is finishing the planning part of the medical floor and will put it out for bids in the next month or two. Construction on that portion will take about six months.

“It’s a very exciting project for us,” Kurtz said. “It’s really going to be beneficial not just for us but all our patients.”

I'm glad for this. my daughter had a baby and to go visit her was a nightmare! One day I had to drive around for about an hr. just to find a spot. Finally someone left and I took her spot! Maybe now it won't be such a hassle!

More parking is definately needed at the hospital!! For patients, visitors and staff! Often times employees can't even find a place to park where they are suppose to. Hopefully this will cure some of the problem!
