City Council to consider historic gas station
Podcast Episode
A citizens group is asking the Janesville City Council Monday for permission to apply for a grant that would explore re-use options for the former gas station at 101 North Franklin Street.
Organizer Shannon Ahrens says although the feasibility study is estimated to cost between $10,000 and $15,000, taxpayers would not foot the bill. The city needs to consent to the grant application, but is not expected to pay for any part of the feasibility study.
Although citizens have suggested plenty of reuse options, from lunch counter to non-profit hub, Ahrens says they want the technical expertise of a feasibility study to address engineering and zoning issues.
In October, the City Council decided to allow the group to explore options for the building's re-use rather than demolish it. The building dates back to the 1930s, but blocks expansion for the police services building.
