The City of Evansville is receiving a state energy independence grant through the "25x25" program.

That program is an initiative by the governor with a goal of 25 percent of the state's electricity and transportation fuels to be provided by renewable resources by 2025.

Evansville Mayor Sandy Decker says the grant will be used in two parts. First, the city determines how much energy is currently being used through an audit. After establishing a baseline, an energy independence team will determine how to improve energy use.

Evansville is one of 23 community groups receiving the grant. Janesville applied and did not receive grant funding, and Beloit did not apply.
