Nine laid off at Angus-Young

— A struggling economy has forced the Janesville-based Angus-Young Associates to lay off 36 percent of its staff.

Before the layoffs of nine people, the architectural, engineering and interior design firm employed 25 in Janesville.

Those laid off include technical and support staff. None of the firm's architects, engineers or projects managers were laid off.

"We need to get more work," said Jeff Hazekamp, a principal in the firm. "We've had a number of projects go on hold, a number of big projects."

Hazekamp said the firm's work pipeline started to constrict in October, and it finally reached the point where people had to be laid off.

"We've been through recessions in my 21 years, but we've never had to lay anyone off," Hazekamp said. "We're just not seeing a lot of new work, although we're certainly chasing it. So is everyone else."

Beyond the loss of the jobs, the layoffs are unfortunate because architectural and engineering firms tend to be on the leading edge of economic development. Growth or increased activity at companies such as Angus Young tend to foreshadow construction activity.

"I certainly wish we were hiring nine people instead," Hazekamp said.

You're not just beatin' around the bush. Non-residential investment in structures has been shot down in flames.
