Milton surges past Monona Grove; Monroe downs Brodhead

Milton High found salvation in a second-quarter surge en route to a 55-44 victory over Monona Grove in a Badger South girls basketball makeup game Tuesday night.

The Red Hawks (3-8, 3-4) fell flat in the first quarter, and the Silver Eagles rolled to a 16-9 advantage. Jessica Schmitz scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter to spark Monona Grove.

Milton got off the deck and smacked Monona Grove, 22-9, in the second quarter for a 31-25 lead that the Red Hawks never relinquished.

Amber Davis scored six of her team-high 17 points and Marie McNall made five straight free throws in the second quarter for Milton. McNall finished with 10 points.

n Monroe 51, Brodhead 43—Brodhead kept things close, but the Cardinals didn’t have enough firepower to match defending state champion Monroe in a nonconference battle between the Rock Valley South’s second-place team and the Badger South co-leader.

The visiting Cheesemakers (10-2), ranked No. 7 in Division 2, snapped a two-game losing streak by dropping Brodhead to 7-3.

Jamie Armstrong led the Cheesemakers with a team-high 16 points. Ashley Hermanson added 11.

Kristen Ruchti led Brodhead with 16 points. She was the only Cardinal in double figures.

n Lakeside 52, Poynette 45—Alex Anthon scored a game-high 14 points, including six in the third quarter, as the Warriors (8-3, 3-1) upended the visiting Indians (3-8, 1-3) in a Capitol North game.

Stephanie Denzer added 11 points for Lakeside. Brittany Kalenberg led Poynette with 13 points.

 n Albany 43, Highland 33—Tiffany Thompson scored 10 of her game-high 12 points in the second half to boost the Comets to a Six Rivers Challenge crossover victory.

Albany (7-7, 3-3) led 14-9 at halftime and 31-23 after three quarters.

n Hustisford 48, Williams Bay 28—The Falcons (7-5, 5-1) blanked visiting Williams Bay, 17-0, in the first quarter as they kept their share of the Trailways South lead.

Marisa Nass scored six of her 12 points in the first quarter to lead Hustisford. The Falcons led 31-9 at halftime.

Becca Hobbs scored 10 points for Williams Bay (3-4, 1-4). Brandi Peltier scored a game-high 15 points for Hustisford (7-5, 5-1).
