Verona High built an early lead and then held on for a 72-68 victory over Madison La Follette IN Big Eight boys basketball Tuesday night.

The Wildcats (8-3, 7-2) raced to a 23-11 first-quarter advantage and 36-23 halftime cushion, only to see the Lancers (3-6) charge back in the second half.

Jason Ziemer scored a team-high 27 points to lead the Wildcats. Adam Wadzinski and Scot Platto added 12 apiece.

La Follette’s D.J. Fulle matchd Ziemer with a 27-point game. Marcus Henly added 12 points, and Chris Redman had 10.

La Follette (68)—Dybevik 8, Klinkner 7, Padgett 4, Fuller 27, Henly 12, Redman 10. Totals: 27-7-68.

Verona (72)—Karls 7, Schaff 7, Ziemer 27, Peterson 2, Ropel 2, Christensen 2, Wadzinski 13, Platto 12. Totals: 28-12-72.

n East 66, Middleton 52—Marquis Mason scored 21 points to lead Madison East (9-2, 7-2) past the Cardinals (4-7, 3-6) in a Big Eight makeup game.

With the win, the Purgolders moved within one-half game of first-place Madison Memorial (9-1, 7-1).

Matt Everson had 15 points to lead Middleton.
