New Walgreens store on Court Street OK'd
JANESVILLE The Janesville Plan Commission on Monday OK'd conditional use permits needed to open a fifth Walgreens in the city, but members did not get any assurance that a nearby Walgreens at Five Points would remain open.
The commission voted unanimously to allow a drive-through and an electronic message center at the corner of Court and Arch streets.
Walgreens is working with a developer to build the store on a 1.65-acre parcel, the former homes of a gas station and of Wisconsin Turf Equipment. The development would include a second new building for a single-use tenant on a 1.59-acre parcel east of Walgreens.
The effect the new Walgreens would have on the nearby Five Points store was part of the discussion Monday, said Steve Werner, commission chairman. Werner said different people lease the real estate at Five Points.
One of the developers Monday told the commission he had no idea what, if any, changes will happen to the Five Points store, Werner said.
The developer said population density carries more weight than geography when deciding where to locate Walgreens.
Werner said the Walgreens would be a good redevelopment for West Court Street.
Gale Price, the city's manager of building and development services, has said the Five Points store serves the downtown neighborhood well with pharmaceutical and grocery supplies. A proposed Hendricks Development Group project at a neighboring site centers on a discount grocery store, but that project is moving slowly, Price said.
In Janesville, Walgreens has two other stores on Milton Avenue and one on the city's south side.
Demolition at the West Court Street properties is expected to start this summer, with construction to follow later this year.

SarahB, last I heard the Hendricks Development Group was pitching to various grocery chains but not yet able to secure a deal. They probably need an anchor tenant to proceed with the project, and in this economy, who knows when that might be?
.
Cherry's, as you may remember, was once slated to move there, and it's taken so long that the business is now in new hands and Brian Cherry has opened a completely different establishment.

Ahhhh, the aging of the baby boomer is causing many changes. Instead of bars in every neighborhood, now we have Walgreens.

Any new business, is still good business. Unfortunately, history has proven that this community has a difficult time with diversity when it comes to supporting local businesses that aren't chains, especially restaurants. There has been some great attempts at bringing in places that are different, but in order for them to stay afloat, people have to be willing to live out of the box and try something different. Until then, chains is what we get.

Instead of Janesville known for the city of parks, it is also going to be known for the city of many Walgreens.
