Evansville receives grant to plan energy independence
EVANSVILLE Evansville is among more than 20 community groups to receive grant money to help create a "25x25" plan to meet Gov. Jim Doyle's goal of generating 25 percent of the state's electricity and transportation fuels from renewable resources by the year 2025.
Evansville submitted an application requesting $37,500, and the state awarded the full amount, Mayor Sandy Decker said.
The grant will be used to conduct an energy assessment of all municipally-owned facilities and vehicles and develop a community-based "25x25" plan for energy independence.
"The plan will determine and prioritize projects and activities that will accomplish the goal of generating 25 percent of Evansville's electricity and transportation fuels from renewable resources by 2025," Decker said. "The energy assessment will establish a baseline of current energy use for planning purposes."
An Evansville Energy Independence Team of 12 to 15 members will develop the plan by Dec. 1.
Evansville is the only area community that has committed to Doyle's challenge.
