Finalists named for Beloit College president
BELOIT Beloit College announced a list of finalists to take over leadership of the campus.
The candidates for college president are:
-- Jeff Abernathy, vice president, dean of the college and professor of English at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
Abernathy previously was vice president for academic affairs, dean of the college and professor of English at West Virginia Wesleyan College and associate dean at Illinois College.
-- Mark Gordon, dean and professor of law at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in Detroit.
Gordon previously was associate professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Before that, he was general deputy assistant secretary for community planning and development at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and served as assistant to the secretary to the governor of New York.
-- H. Scott Bierman, dean of the college at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., where he has been a faculty member for 27 years.
The candidates were chosen from more than 50 applicants during a six-month international search, according to a news release. They are scheduled to visit the campus individually before the end of January.
The visits will include forums for the campus community to meet the candidates in groups and then in a general session and reception.
Each candidate will make a presentation in which he will have an opportunity to present his views on what he would bring to the presidency.
The presidential search committee is scheduled to make its recommendations to the college’s board of trustees when the board meets Feb. 6-7.
