Madison East High School pulled a shocker in Big Eight Conference boys basketball Friday night.

Marquis Mason scored 20 points, and the Purgolders erupted for 26 fourth-quarter points, in a 53-44 upset of previously unbeaten Madison Memorial.

The five-time defending conference champion and top-rated Spartans, ranked eighth in the Midwest by USA Today, suffered their first loss of the season in falling to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the Big Eight.

It snapped the Spartans’ 18-game Big Eight winning streak, dating back to a 57-55 loss to Beloit last season. It also was only the second loss for Memorial in its last 62 conference games and the third in its last 88.

East (8-2, 6-2) moved to within a game of Memorial in the conference, thanks to a 26-12 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Nimrod Hilliard IV added 16 points for East, which trailed 32-27 after three quarters.

Marquette University recruit Jeronne Maymon had 18 points to lead the Spartans.
