JANESVILLE A Janesville man was hospitalized this morning with a knife wound to the neck, and his wife was in jail, accused of stabbing him.
Nickole E. Pergande, 35, of 530 S. Randall Ave., was arrested Sunday on a charge of attempted first-degree reckless homicide.
Police were called to the Randall Avenue home at 10:30 a.m. Sunday to assist paramedics. A police officer arrived first and found Jaymie Pergande, 38, sitting on the kitchen floor, holding a towel to his neck and “covered almost entirely from head to toe in blood,” according to a police report.
Jaymie Pergande told the officer that his wife tried to kill him while he was in the shower. He said he had a poison oak rash from a hunting trip, and Nickole was examining the rash while he showered. He said his eyes were closed when Nickole cut him, the report states.
Nickole told the officer Jaymie was lying. She admitted she was with him in the bathroom but said she did not know how the injury occurred. She said she had gone to the basement to check on the couple’s two children.
Jaymie Pergande was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was treated for a wound to the neck. Police Lt. Tim Hiers described the wound as at least 7 inches long and quite deep.
Hiers said Jaymie Pergande has been unable to talk and is communicating with police in writing. Police are waiting until Pergande’s condition improves in order to get a complete statement.
Family members asked that no information be released about his condition, a hospital spokeswoman said this morning.
Police took several kitchen knives as evidence, Hiers said.
Jaymie told police he argued with Nickole on Saturday about his suspicions that she took his firearms from the house. Hiers said a gun safe containing multiple firearms was missing when Jaymie returned from hunting, and he had reported a burglary Saturday.
Nickole denies she took the firearms, Hiers said.
Police records indicate no previously reported domestic incidents at the residence.
Nickole was locked in the Rock County Jail this morning. She was scheduled for an initial court appearance at 3 p.m. today, but Hiers said the appearance might be delayed if the district attorney’s office needs more time to review reports before charging her.
Online court records indicate the couple filed for separation last September, but Hiers said they still were living together. A court hearing in the separation case had been scheduled for Jan. 30.
